UbD: Understanding by Design

We are currently formulating our UbD (Understanding by Design). This UbD is a new curriculum mandated by the DepEd (Department of Education) to be implemented to all first year level of this year. Last summer, teachers attended the UbD seminars. I wasn’t able to attend the said seminars for some reasons. One, I attended the Cebu Blog Camp and second I woke up late and I decided not to attend for I have to judge a Super Show Mom Contest. ( an irresponsible teacher huh!)

Now, I have to catch up what i had missed during my absence. As I google the word Ubd, I was amazed that foreign countries adapted this curriculum since 2003 or earlier. Some had already has its reversion. But here in our country Philippines, it sounds Greek to us. Every now and then, the education system as its ever changing the curriculum. It is just the same with eating other set of foods without chewing the previous one. Last year, we applied the PBL or problem- based learning. Still it is Greek to us. This PBL was implemented in all levels in our school. But in other school, they used this PBL starting in first year level , followed by the 2nd year level, 3rd and 4th year. So this means that the school adapted the PBL gradually. The situation in our school was, we implemented the PBL to all levels in the same year. What an agony?!

Then, here comes UbD. Well, I just hope that teachers will still have time to teach the students not spending much time in formulating the UbD.

    whats Ubd?

    • vangie abubakar says:

UBD is now required design for lesson planning in the first year, perhaps with the assumption that in the high school level, students can actively participate in communicative activities (in English), can discuss topics and current issues in Araling Panlipunan. Try reading the Grade 3 books in Sibika.Questions like: ano ang magagawa mong tulong sa pamahalaan dahil sa pagtaas ng presyo ng gasolina? Huh? Unsa man mahimo san bata na 8-9 years pa unya waay makaon?

hahahaha it takes more on theory p rin… dami kasing experiment sa curriculum natin at ang mahirap pa d natin alam kung epektibo nga ba kasi sa sunod n taon iibahin namn ang curriculum kasi iba namn ang secretary of education

implementing ubd in t.l.e subject is not easy because the main problem here is… lack of facilities.aside from that although were starting implementing in our school, and were not yet ready because we dont have any book to use it.we just research some topics the we should teach to our students.

Ubd is nothing but instructional design. To arrest the poor ability of some teachers to design curriculum efficiently and collectively, some “experts” come up with alternative instructional design methodologies which is nothing new but the name.

It’s proponent call UBD as designing backward. I think that complicates it even more. Because that is not backward, but the real way of designing instruction.

PBL? UbD? I think our government don’t know which framework to follow. This changes always leave the educational system hanging. One framework is adopted then another is coming our way. The DepEd I guess have not even evaluated previous frameworks if it worked or not and now they want to introduce another.

I think this is the very reason why educational system in the Philippines is failing.

    • tetz says:

changing curriculum and additional years for the basic education it is not the solution.poverty and the attitude of the students in their studies.yap your right! DepEd don’t even know the real problem in education!

Daw lente ning taga Dep Ed! They always adapt new designs for the curriculum and yet, in the end they are unsuccessful, wala pa ring pagbabago! Di pa rin umaahon ang bayan sa kahirapan, wala akong nakitang impact sa UBDing or UBDong ito. Puro kagaguhan ang ginagawa nila. They should try benchmarking institutions like in Japan and Korea. Perhaps, may makita silang magandang curriculum design.

Wala din pala silang UBD para sa Physics kaya MLC ang gamit ko. Ang hirap talaga mga ka Friendships! Kaya pala back to square one magturo ang mga instructors sa college kasi laman ng MLC sa physics eh puro “Energy”-energy in society, energy and environment, energy in transporation… so on and so forth. Ibig sabihin walang mabuting pundasyon ang mga bata kaya pagdating sa college puro bagsak ang mga bata sa Ateneo. Walang alignment kasi sa college. This strategy actually was implemented in Marcos time at hanggang ngayon wala pa ring pagbabago! Hahayz! Ano bang buhay to, oo!!!

For me learning new things is fun. Using UBD in my first year class in math was really challenging..But what I liked most , it really helps riching near to them. UBD helped me to know better the traits and talents of my students at the same time to be close emotionally with them. Our bonding was great because it was full of activities. Retention was on a higher level in my class compared to the previous year.

Well that UBD thing is still like a fog inside my head. It’s really something I can’t grasp with. I just hope that UBD thing would be meaningful to my students. I’m just trying my best in teaching but sometimes DUH students can’t take it. They’re not into it… Our educational system is continuously changing and we can’t follow that fast.
