Last Wednesday, I decided to go to school in ALS (Alternative Learning System) class so that next year, I will become a college student… that’s if I pass in ALS.

Last Thursday, I went to school to attend my first class but the guard called me and told me that the teacher in-charge is not around because they had a meeting but then I still went to the building where our class is located. The building is separated from other school building and the it was surrounded with trees and grasses. I already know that we will be cleaning the surrounded before we will start it. And a school worker will get his redmax trimmers to trim the tall grasses at the back of the building.

Even though I am disappointed because there was no class, I am still looking forward to the next meeting this Tuesday. ALS class have only 2 meetings every week and the class starts at 2:00 pm until 5:00 pm. Will be going there this coming Tuesday hopefully.

One of the speakers we had during our in-service training in CAP theater last June 4 was Fr. Roderick Salazar. He was indeed excellent as he delivers his talk. He is very witty in explaining his topic and even gives lots of samples that could relate to our real life situation.

One of his examples goes this way…..

“A Spanish teacher was explaining to her class that in Spanish, unlike English, nouns are designated as either masculine or feminine. “House” for instance, is feminine: “la casa.” “Pencil,” however, is masculine: “el lapiz.”

A student asked, “What gender is ‘computer’?”

Instead of giving the answer, the teacher split the class into two groups, male and female, and asked them to decide for themselves whether “computer” should be a masculine or a feminine noun.

Each group was asked to give four reasons for its recommendation.

The men’s group decided that “computer” should definitely be of the feminine gender (“la computer”), because:
1. No one but their creator understands their internal logic;

2. The native language they use to communicate with other computers is incomprehensible to everyone else;

3. Even the smallest! mistakes are stored in long term memory for possible later retrieval; and

4. As soon as you make a commitment to one, you find yourself spending half your paycheck on accessories for it.

(No chuckling… this gets better!)

The women’s group, however, concluded that computers should be Masculine
(“el computer”), because:
1. In order to do anything with them, you have to turn them on;

2. They have a lot of data but still can’t think for themselves;

3. They are supposed to help you solve problems, but half the time they ARE the problem; and

4. As soon as you commit to one, you realize that if you had waited a little longer, you could have gotten a better model.

The women won.”

(Source: http://forums.cnet.com/7723-6130_102-141866.html)

After hearing this, most of the teachers were laughing and that includes me. I said ” I must find that sample, I am sure that could be found in the internet. So, here it is…

I hope you learn something from it…

I am excited to attend this dance workshop. Our school, University of Cebu already set a budget for this event. This may be chance for me to be updated with our own dances and those unpublished dances.

The National Folk Dance Workshop will be on May 16 – 20, 2011 at Bago City, Negros Occidental. As I read the memo through the use of internet, I immediately wrote a letter to our school head. It was fortunately approved by our Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, Dr. Ulysses Aparece.

Here is the statement about the up coming seminar.

“The Cultural Center of the Philippines and the Philippine Folk Dance Society (PFDS) in coordination with the Department of Education (DepEd), Commission on Higher Education (CHED), Technical Skills and Development Authority (TESDA),Civil Service Commission (CSC), and the Local Government of Bago City will conduct the 31st National Folk Dance Workshop for Teachers on May 16-20, 2011 at the Manuel Y. Torres Memorial Complex, Bago City, Negros Occidental.

The activity aims to address the needs and concerns of teachers in folk dance education and production as well as to help develop a deeper appreciation for Filipino dance and music traditions. The Workshop also pays tribute to pioneering Filipino folk dance researchers by teaching and promoting their outstanding works.

Teachers, dancers, choreographers and members of dance groups will be participating in this Workshop. The Workshop will consist of practicum works, lecture-demonstrations, group dynamics, street dance, cultural shows, regional presentations and the culminating showcase.

A registration fee of P3,000.00, not inclusive of meals, board and lodging, will be charged. For more information, please call the CCP Dance Division at tel. no. (02) 832-1125 local 1602/1603 or the PNU PE-DETAME Office at tel. no. (02) 302-7770 or email jopinay4u@yahoo.com, lag_7254@yahoo.com and rmfronda@yahoo.com.”

The University of Cebu High School Department had a team building at El Salvador, one of the resorts in Danao, Cebu. It was participated by faculty members. In our department, I was assigned to make a “kinilaw”. So, I woke up early and rushed to Pasil, a seaport in Cebu City. Then, I prepared the kinilaw. The assembly time was 7:30 to 8:00 am, I was almost late. The second bus was about to depart. Good thing that my co-teacher Abcill called me as to where I am. I told her that I was almost near at the school. To cut the story short, we reached the venue safe and sound.

Before the program started, we eat the foods that we had prepared. I was upset with my kinilaw whether they will like it. But it turn out that everyone who tried it gives positive response. Then suddenly, the program has started headed by our administrative assistant Mam Norma Oplado. Part of the program was the team building activity. The Mapeh Department was assigned in facilitating the activity. Before I join the rest of the group, I changed my attire for it was too hot. I wore a white short. My gluteus minimus was almost seen most especially when I bend. A cellulite cure is what I need. But that moment, I didn’t care what I wear for all I want is to feel comfortable. Nevertheless, the game was so fun and all of us enjoyed it.

We are currently formulating our UbD (Understanding by Design). This UbD is a new curriculum mandated by the DepEd (Department of Education) to be implemented to all first year level of this year. Last summer, teachers attended the UbD seminars. I wasn’t able to attend the said seminars for some reasons. One, I attended the Cebu Blog Camp and second I woke up late and I decided not to attend for I have to judge a Super Show Mom Contest. ( an irresponsible teacher huh!)

Now, I have to catch up what i had missed during my absence. As I google the word Ubd, I was amazed that foreign countries adapted this curriculum since 2003 or earlier. Some had already has its reversion. But here in our country Philippines, it sounds Greek to us. Every now and then, the education system as its ever changing the curriculum. It is just the same with eating other set of foods without chewing the previous one. Last year, we applied the PBL or problem- based learning. Still it is Greek to us. This PBL was implemented in all levels in our school. But in other school, they used this PBL starting in first year level , followed by the 2nd year level, 3rd and 4th year. So this means that the school adapted the PBL gradually. The situation in our school was, we implemented the PBL to all levels in the same year. What an agony?!

Then, here comes UbD. Well, I just hope that teachers will still have time to teach the students not spending much time in formulating the UbD.

In 2002, University of Cebu faced great challenged. This challenge made the institution became one of the strongest institution in Central Cebu. It was April of the same year when the entire high school building was burnt. Facing with this challenge was not only felt by the president but also teachers and students as well. I am a newly hired teacher then. I really felt the needs of the students. We just hold our classes at the lobby using long wooden table with chair. Each classes were just separated using a bulletin board. You can just imagine how the noise destructs the student’s learning. In other words, the place is not conducive for learning.

However, University is a big institution and I am sure that it has a business insurance. Building a new infrastructure was just easy for them. In just a year, UC erected new face of high school building. All of us were happy and enjoyed its new classroom and facilities.

I was born and raised in a low class family. My kin’s in both sides are really experiencing destitution. This is due to lack of education. Their parents cannot provide this education to their children. Consequently, they were forced to find a blue collar jobs and they got married at the early age. Since they were revolving in one place without any other means of leisure and meeting other people, they tend to marry some of our 3rd or 4th degree cousins. Isn’t an outcast attitude?

In order to stop, my clan’s need proper education so they could have sensible and stable job. If I could only help all of them, if I could just have enough money to provide them education and their daily needs. I am willing to extend my help. I know that my salary is just enough to needs of my family. So for now, what could I help them is simply pray for them that God will give them enough strength, love and wisdom. In this manner, they could still perform their functions and survive for the family.

This is also the subject that I am teaching in University of Cebu. Ever since I am in love in blogging. I made to realize to make a website for my students. This is an outlet/ extension of the topics that we had discussed. The summarized topics, challenging activities and outlet of expressing student’s point of view of certain concepts are the main purpose of creating this website.

I am so happy with the positive response of my students. I appreciate that the time that they were spending in playing online game was now divided. Doing their assignment and project online and playing/ chatting/ facebooking online at the same time.

I made some daily deals to them. Every time they will participate in the class, they will receive corresponding points. Moreover, other way to have points is to visit our website and they have to leave comments. This is the reason that www.mapeh.org was born.
