Ballad of a Mother’s Heart

Last year, when I was reinstated in my work. I borrowed three kinds of books namely: ” The Evolution of Dances, English Grammar for Filipinos and Prose and Poems. As I scan the books, I didn’t regret of borrowing it for it was really full of information and useful specially in my field of teaching.

When I flip the pages of the prose and poem book, I was struck with this poem. I am dying to share this to all of you for it is really a nice poem which you can get a moral lesson.

Here it is:

Ballad of a Mother’s Heart

The night was dark,
For the moon was young,
And the Stars were asleep and rare,
The clouds were thick,
Yet Youth went out,
To see his Maiden fair.

Dear one,
he pleaded as he knelt before her feet in tears.
My love is true,
Why you have kept me waiting all this years?
The maiden looked at him.
Unmoved it seemed,
And whispered low.

Persistent Youth,
You have to prove by deeds,
Your love is true.
“There’s not a thing
I haven’t do for you,Beloved” said he.
“Then, go.” said she. “To your mother dear,
And bring her heart to me.

Without another word,
Youth left and went to his mother dear.
He opened her breast and took her HEART!
But he did not shed a tear.

Then back to his Maiden fair,
He run unmindful of the rain.
But his feet slipped, And he fell down,
And load, he groan with pain!

And then, he held the prize,
That would win his Maiden’s hands.
But he thought of his mother dear,
So kind,so sweet,so fond

But then,
he heard a voice!
Not from his lips,
But all apart!

“Get up” it said.
“Are you hurt,Child?”
It was his mother’s heart
The ballad of a Mother’s heart.

What do you think is the moral lesson of this poem? Is this possible?  Do you know someone who is fight back to their parents just to please their love ones?

Sharing of an ideas are welcome.

it’s really a nice and inspiring poem… it’s all about how great mothers’ love is…
there are lot’s of people esp. the youth that can disobey and fight their parents for the sake of the man/woman they love… but i haven’t known someone who can kill his/her parents for their love interest…

amm… I just thought about this… maybe the girl ddn’t literally mean bring d heart of his mother, but the heart represents only the love of his mother… that the girl only wants the be loved and accept by the boy’s mother?… oh… wt a big mistake!…

yes, your are right lalyn, the girl wants to be accepted by his mother… Sometimes in real life, we got mistakes because of misinterpretation, misunderstanding. So we better comprehend the situation before we will act out.

If the girl wants to be loved by the boy’s mother, why would it be a big mistake? It’s not something a boy would regret if ever that is his girl’s wish.

Maybe the maiden symbolizes wicked things a mother doesn’t want her child to do; such as vices, misbehavior, illegal things, etc. Definitely big mistakes. Those would surely hurt a mother’s heart.

maybe the girl wants to know if the boy really loves the girl so much

I was wondering if anyone could possibly figure out just what exactly the midterm elections could possibly suggest for free college grants. It appears to be the Republicans are going to look to slash every thing they could cut which in all probability means scholarships for college education. I just don’t know how these people feel this country is ever going to be competitive, if the actual cost of higher education continues to go up, but grants get tougher to get. It can be distressing to think I will be in debt $40,000 or more along with not really knowing if I can actually have a job opportunity after I graduate in this tight economy.

  9. jomark says:

sometimes we fail to realize the essence of our mother…..to tell you frankly we cannot feel the love of our mother unless we became a mother too…

what english song shares d same theme with this poem?…

  11. i have another interpretation of the poem..
let us not dwell on the literal meaning of the poem..
i think the “YOUTH” in the poem represents us “HUMAN”
the “MAIDEN” represents “HUMAN’S DESIRE AND WANTS”
then the “MOTHER” represents the “COUNTRY”
and lastly the “MOTHER’S HEART” symbolizes the “COUNTRY’S NATURAL RESOURCES OR POSSESSIONS”….

  12. elen says:

    wow ………..very inspirational……
sometimes we forgot our mothers ..sometimes we refouse to them ,we forgot that they loves us. but in reality they truely loves us as thier beloved child.

hi good eve guys this poem is my report and im happy that this was been assigned to me and my comment is we dont need to get the literal meaning of the poem just relate it instead how ? is it true that a lot of youth nowadays disobey with their parent because of their love ones.

Few years back, when i met my husband who was then my boyfriend, the usual things that made us busy were having a spelling contest, playing scrabble and reciting poems. This poem is known to both of us maybe because we are both bookworms. We spent a couple of days discussing this and exchanging thoughts for we never got tired masticating each word in this poem. When English Festival was announced to be coming up soon in our school I never hesitated to give this to my 6th graders as a piece for poem interpretation contest. From the very emotional discussion i had with my then bf, I was able to explain this dramatically and emotionally to my contestants who shed tears upon understanding the poem and thus led to a superb performance of interpreting in front of audiences and competitors. I cannot imagine how the competitive faces of other contestants resembled the same faces of the audiences who were in tears with their hankies though smiling for they cannot believe how they were moved by such performance of my grade 6 pupils. They made it known to the people that the maiden in the poem wanted to be loved by the boy’s mother and that when she said “bring her heart to me” doesnt literally mean he has to do so, For in a relationship of love, it is very important that the parents ( represented by mother) are informed and in the sincerest act of love the boys introduced their love one to their family. The role of education takes over to make the boy understand what the girl wants. And in the last part, when the heart spoke, “Get up were you hurt child?” it only showed us that despite the disrespect and harmful acts we did to our mother, she would not think of how bad she was hurt instead she would think of how she can ease your pain. Educating the young ones and making them value the presence of their parents are two good things to do to make them understand how sweet it is to be loved by both their partners and their own families.

This poem relatively important, we can get a lot of values in it especially through the love of our mother. We should respect them with all of our heart because whatever happens they are still our mother. Their endlessly love will never ever fade. This is the meaning of this poem that wrote by Jose La Villa Tierra.
